The school system has made a commitment to provide these meals by providing adequate equipment, renovated kitchens, and quality staff. This commitment is the first step in ensuring quality food preparation, increasing student participation in the program, and increasing nutritional educational resources.
Breakfast is offered to students at all Decatur City schools. Students have the choice of a hot breakfast or cereal every day. Salads, fresh fruits and vegetables, and sack lunches are offered as alternatives to the regular lunch in all schools.

Our school system participates in the National School Lunch program and offers free or reduced-price meals to students who are eligible. Free and reduced meal applications are sent home with all students at the beginning of each school year. Parents are asked to fill out applications and return them to the office of the principal. Only one application needs to be filled out for all members of a family. Applications must be turned in every year. The school nutrition office approves applications based on need and guidelines set up by the federal government.
        Cafeteria Procedures
The school cafeterias serve nutritious meals every school day. Menus are sent home at the beginning of each month, and all students are encouraged to participate. Breakfast is served between 7:30 and 8:00 a.m. daily. If a child is allergic to certain foods, a doctor's excuse is required. Although students cannot go home for lunch, no student remains in school all day without lunch. In addition, students should not bring soft drinks to school. Parents who wish to eat lunch at school on a particular day should notify the school office by 9:00 a.m. of that day.
Parents are notified at the beginning of each school year about meal prices. Students may pay for meals by the day, week, or month. The money is put in an account set up for each student and basically works like a debit card. Charging of meals is discouraged although sometimes unavoidable. Parents will be notified after two meals have been charged, and no more than three charges will be allowed. If a student exceeds this limit, a peanut butter and jelly sandwich and unflavored lowfat milk will be provided to sustain the student for the remainder of the school day.
In this whole article it fails to mention that they also sell extra un healthy food on the side. Since this is about half of the food that they sell it is odd to me that they don't mention it. Why don't they want people to know about it? At a normal day of school my table of 12 gets at least 3-5 baskets of fries and 2-4 packs of cookies. As i dump my tray i see hundres of broccolie and other veggies in there but very few fries and burgers and nochos. Does this mean all the average student eats is the buger and fries? and if so would it be healthyer to go some where like chick-fil-a instead?
